The results of joint Austrian-German-Swiss research. programs range over new phenomena in compounds with Si-Si bonds (transitions between molecular compounds and solids, cyclosilanes, polysilanes, silicides, amorphous hydrogenated silicon), novel silicon-oxygen systems (functionalized sol-gel compounds, spherosiloxanes, siloxene), compounds with highly and low-coordinated silicon, and new spectroscopic and analytical techniques for the characterization of molecular and polymeric silicon compounds.

Silicon, a nonmetallic chemical element in the carbon family that makes up 27.7 percent of Earth’s crust; it is the second most abundant element in the crust, being surpassed only by oxygen. Learn more about the characteristics, distribution, and uses of silicon in this article.

D.A. Armitage, in Comprehensive Organometallic Chemistry II, 1995. 1.2 The Silicon–Carbon Bond. Silicone polymers are expensive compared with organic polymers because of the cost of reducing silicon dioxide to silicon. In the Rochow process, this is then heated with appropriate catalysts to 300–400 °C and reacted with methyl chloride to give a range of methyl-substituted chlorosilanes.

chemistry of silicone compounds to the practicing chemist. It has been divided into two parts, the first dealing with basic chemistry of silicones, and the second dealing with silicone based surfactants. Despite the fact that silicone compounds have been around for over fifty years, the chemistry of these materials remains elusive to the average formulating chemist. This is indeed unfortunate
